PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE AND MENTAL HEALTH OF TRANSGENDERS: A REVIEW

1Anna Khursheed Qadri1 & Dr. Sakshi Kaul2

Abstract: In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the prevalence of abuse and discrimination faced by transgender individuals and those who defy traditional gender norms. Abuse can be verbal and physical mistreatment from various sources such as family, friends, co-workers, teachers, mental health professionals, strangers, and authorities such as police. Research has shown that gender-related abuse significantly negatively impacts the mental health and overall well-being of transgender individuals. Studies have revealed a strong correlation between psychological and physical gender abuse and the experience of psychological distress, depression, and even suicidal thoughts among transgender individuals
