Abstract: The global energy crisis has intensified the search for sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels, with biofuels emerging as a key contender. This review critically examines the evolution of biofuels, focusing on the potential and challenges of third-generation biofuels derived from algal biomass. The paper begins by discussing the drawbacks of first-generation biofuels, which are linked to food security issues, and the limitations of second-generation biofuels, which require extensive land use. The study delves into the promising prospects of algal biofuels, highlighting their advantages such as high biomass yield, rapid growth, and the ability to thrive in non-arable environments. The review study also explores the technological and economic challenges that hinder the commercial viability of algal biofuels, including efficiency improvements, cost reduction, and environmental considerations. Furthermore, it discusses the potential role of genetic engineering in enhancing biofuel production from algae and cyanobacteria. The paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of third-generation biofuels, identifying key areas where further research and innovation are needed to overcome existing barriers and advance toward sustainable energy solutions.
