A case control study to evaluate the relationship between Temporomandibular disorders and psychological status using psychological assessment tool

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) have multifactorial etiology amongst which stress is the most common predisposing factor. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of psychological stress in patients with Temporomandibular disorders. Materials and Methods:- The 100 subjects included in the study were divided into two groups i.e Group A and Group B. Group A comprised of 50 subjects with signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and group B -50 normal healthy individual. The psychological status of the patient was evaluated using Presumptive Stressful life event scale. Results:- Statistical significant co-relation was observed on comparing the Presumptive Stressful Life Event Scale (PSLES)score in the both the groups. The statistical tests used for the analysis of the result were Chi-square Test, Z-test and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. Conclusion:- There is positive co-relation between psychological stress and TMDs.
