Atherosclerotic plaque growth is known to be positively correlated with low oscillatory wall shear stress. We identified several articles containing data for intimal thickening in atherosclerotic arteries, and compiled them in a consistent manner to relate (non-dimensional) thickness and mean wall shear stress. An improved exponential equation with better R square value than previous equations is formulated to correlate the compiled data. Parameters such as age and kinetics of smooth muscle cell growth are excluded from the model. The proposed mathematical model can be implemented in computational aid dynamics studies that aim to estimate thickening of artery wall based on mechanical variables alone.
