Abstract

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric disorder that develops in the months and years following exposure to severe trauma. The risk of developing PTSD after a traumatic event varies by trauma typeand is highest following exposure to sexual violence (11.4%), particularly rape (19.0%). Major depressive disorder (MDD) is considered a serious public health issue that adversely impacts an individual’s quality of life and contributes significantly to the global burden of disease. Globally, more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Depression has been a leading cause of disability worldwide and is a major contributor to overall global burden of disease. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder that can cause substantial dysfunction affecting daily physical, psychological, and social functioning. GAD is characterized by persistent, excessive and unrealistic worry about everyday things difficult to control accompanied by nonspecific physical and psychological symptoms (restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, or sleep disturbances).
