Abstract

BACKGROUND - The prevalence of diabetes is rapidly increasing worldwide, leading to an upsurge in surgeries for diabetic foot complications. Diabetic lower limb ulcers, which often result in infection, gangrene, and potential limb amputation, are common, complex, and costly sequelae of diabetes. This study aims to compare the rate of wound healing between Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) using Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) and conventional dressings in the management of diabetic lower limb ulcers. Data was collected over a three-year period from August 2020 to October 2022, involving patients with diabetic lower limb ulcers distributed equally between the VAC dressing and conventional saline-based dressing at a tertiary care institute in Pune, India. The results showed that the VAC group exhibited a significantly lower median ulcer size at week 1 and week 3 compared to the conventional dressing group.
