Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. This review article aims to explore the various nursing interventions available for managing oral mucositis in this patient population. The impact of oral mucositis on the quality of life of cancer patients, as well as its potential to lead to treatment delays and interruptions, will be discussed. The review will also delve into the pathophysiology of oral mucositis, including the inflammatory processes and mucosal damage involved. Various nursing interventions will be evaluated, including oral care protocols, pharmacological interventions, nutritional support, and patient education strategies. The efficacy of these interventions in preventing and managing oral mucositis symptoms, such as pain, inflammation, and risk of infection, will be examined. Furthermore, the role of the nursing staff in assessing oral mucositis, implementing interventions, and monitoring patient outcomes will be highlighted.
