Reaction in between 1,8-naphthyridine-3-carbohydrazide 1 and thiophene-2-carbaldehyde 2 with p-TSA was ground by pestle and mortar to give hydrazones 3. Furthermore, hydrazones 3 on oxidative cyclization with PhI(OAc)2-Al2O3 in the solid state at RT under grinding condi-tions afforded the respective 2-(2-substituted [1,8]-naphthyridin-3-yl)-5-(thiophen-2-yl)- 1,3,4-oxadiazoles 4a-h in good yields (Scheme I).
